Should I Install a 3-phase or single-phase car charger?

If you have 3-phase to your house, I recommend that you install a 3-phase charger.

A three-phase charger is a few hundred dollars more, and I think you will appreciate the extra charging speed.

For example, a single-phase Delta Max charger is $2,000, and the 3-phase version is $2,300.

Even if you only install a single-phase charger, I recommend running a 3 phase cable from your switchboard to the charger. If usually won't cost much more and will make your home more future-proof for when you get more than one EV or decide you'd like faster charging.

Bear in mind that most EVs will not charge 3x faster with 3 phase, but 50% faster.

For example, a Tesla Model 3 will charge at 7 kW on single-phase and 11 kW on 3-phase.
