Q. I have a solar system that has stopped working. My inverter shows an error message.
I can't find Sun Solar who installed it in 2014
I can't find a manual and I can't find the Inverter importer, who I believe is Solar Energy Australia. Can you help?
A. When you need to claim on a solar system, solar inverter or solar panel warranty, under Australian Consumer Law the solar company you paid for the system is responsible. If they are no longer around, and it is a hardware problem, then the company that imported the hardware is responsible.
So the first port of call should be sun solar. A quick Google does not show their website or contact details. There is a True Local listing for "Sun Solar Group" with no address but a phone number which goes to a completely different business.
If I simply try "sunsolar.com.au" I get nothing.
Which begs the question: what the hell has happened to them?
Let's search for "Sun Solar" on the government's Australian Business Register.
Brace yourself - here are the results (I clicked on the "All ABNs" tab so I can see companies that have shut down too) :
As you can see - there are a gazillion companies that could refer to themselves as "Sun Solar". To target the correct one I need more information.
I have asked Bruce, the questioner if he can find the company's ABN which should be on any invoices or quotes or documentation he received.
I'll restart the hunt if he gets back to me and update this.
Moral of the story so far: Ensure you write the solar company's ABN down - ideally on the documentation package you should receive - as part of the installation rules.
Or if you are good at losing paperwork - Texta it onto the inside of the switchboard door or on the inverter: "Installed by: Acme Solar ABN 123 456 789"
